The University Race Equality Scheme
The development of the Race Equality Scheme is an important step for the University in publicly reaffirming the actions it commits to take in the promotion of race equality and elimination of racial discrimination. The Scheme due to be published in April 2008 will set out the steps that the University will take to eliminate racial discrimination, promote understanding of religious and cultural beliefs and promote equality in these areas. This Scheme, similarly to the Gender and Disability Equality Schemes will not be a policy that is left on the shelf. Instead it will form the basis of a programme of change in how the University approaches its core activities such as recruitment, progression and access to services and opportunities. The University intends to take positive steps to achieve race equality throughout all its services for staff, students and the wider community. That's why the Equality and Diversity Team will be working with all Directorates and Faculties across the University to implement the actions that will be identified.
Developing the Scheme
Central to the development of the Scheme is involvement and consultation with staff and students from all racial or ethnic backgrounds to help us identify the actions and priorities which the University needs to address.
Several involvement and consultation channels have been used to assist in the development of the Scheme including the University's Diversity and Inclusion staff survey and the Student Satisfaction Survey; The Black and Minority Ethnic Staff Network Groups and the Students Union; the findings from consultation carried out as part of the University's Race in Leadership programme; Race Equality Audits; and staff and student surveys.
