Wellcome Trust Open Access Grant
Wellcome's grant conditions require that all research papers that have been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and are supported in whole or in part by the grant, must be made available from UK PubMed Central as soon as possible, and in any event within six months of publication. This is in line with the Trust's Open Access policy: http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/About-us/Policy/Spotlight-issues/Open-access/index.htm
How to comply with the policy
The University of Manchester has been awarded a grant by the Wellcome Trust to cover the cost of open access fees. This grant is administered by James Evans in the Research Office. The grant is intended to cover the cost of the publisher depositing a copy of your article in UK PubMed Central (UKPMC) at the time of publication.
As an author there are two ways in which you can comply with the grant condition to ensure that your Wellcome supported research is made freely accessible via UKPMC and UKPMC.
Firstly, you can submit your manuscript to a journal that offers an open access option. Journals who provide this facility will take responsibility for depositing the final, published version of your paper in UKPMC and making it freely available on the day of publication.
Where a publisher does not provide a paid open access option but allows deposit in UKPMC after an acceptable embargo period you should submit an electronic copy of your accepted author manuscript to PubMed Central via the UK Manuscript Submission Service ensuring that you set a delayed release date for the paper. The UKMSS service provides an online demonstration of the submission process within the help section of the website.
